How to get Rid of Scars – Are there options?
Researching how to get rid of scars? You’re not alone. Each year 100 million people worldwide will develop some sort of scar and 55 million of those scars will become problematic.1 Many of those afflicted with scars want to know how to get rid of scars. A consumer research study found that 44% of patients are unhappy with their scars following surgery, and 87% of patients wanted their scars to be less noticeable. In many cases, scars can cause sleep disturbance, anxiety, depression, and disruption of daily activities.2
For example, Keloid and burn scars are often described as painful, disfiguring, embarrassing, and even functionally disabling.3 In one scar treatment study, 45% of patients felt that they were psychologically affected by their scars and 27% felt they were physically affected.4
If you are seeking to learn how to get rid of scars, you should understand that there is really no way to totally remove or get rid of most scars. The good news is that there are solutions to help prevent new scars from becoming abnormal and to improve the appearance of existing hypertrophic and keloid scars—even those more than 4 years old!5
Kelo-cote® is a patented topical silicone gel for the management and prevention of abnormal scars in the form of hypertrophic scars and keloids. Silicone is the clinical gold standard for scar treatment and scar prevention. The International Clinical Recommendations on Scar Management, published in 2002, recommends silicone as first-line therapy for the prevention and treatment of hypertrophic scars and keloids.6 Kelo-cote® has been successfully used to manage scars resulting from trauma, burns and surgery. Regardless of the origin of the scar, Kelo-cote® has proven results, as evidenced by clinical studies and satisfied healthcare professionals and customers from around the world. Kelo-cote® is the most studied topical scar product, with more than 2,000 patients participating in a variety of published clinical studies.
It is suggested by several clinical studies that silicone gel sheets have been proven to work due to their semi-occlusive nature. Kelo-cote® gel works in the same way as silicone gel sheets, however its unique formulation ensures that on application, an ultra thin layer of silicone binds to the top layer of the skin (stratum corneum) forming a durable yet discreet sheet. It is much easier to use a gel product than a sheet for daily use, and more comfortable in warm climates where sheets may cause sweating and maceration.
Kelo-cote® is designed to help treat, reduce, prevent or soften the following types of scars: Keloid, Hypertrophic and Burn scars as well as surgical scars from cosmetic plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation and reduction, tummy tuck and body contouring as well as Caesarian section, mastectomy, Mohs surgery, hysterectomy, body piercing and cleft lip reconstruction.
